Xi'an drum music originated from ancient Chinese military bands and has undergone a long and tumultuous development process, incorporating a variety of musical elements and forming a unique musical style. It carries a rich historical and cultural connotation and is one of the precious heritages of ancient Chinese civilization.


The history of Xi'an Drum Music can be traced back to the Qin Dynasty, when it was called "drum and blow". Over time, it developed into the "music and dance" of the Tang Dynasty, and was widely used in the court and temples. As the Tang Dynasty flourished, Xi'an drum music gradually became an important accompaniment to banquets, celebrations and military ceremonies. During the Song Dynasty, Xi'an drum music incorporated more folk music elements and developed a richer and more diverse repertoire.

/ Sitting Form

坐乐

Sitting form (zuò yuè) is a form of music in which the player performs while sitting in a state of silence. In seated music, the player usually sits with the instrument placed in front of or beside him or her and plays the instrument through the movement of the hands, feet, or other body parts. The performer is able to use instruments such as fingers, palms, or mallets more intently when sitting music to accurately tap or strike the instrument in order to express a wealth of musical techniques and emotions.

The sitting form is suitable for playing complex melodies and rhythms, demonstrating the player's skill and mastery of the instrument. Sitting form is often used in chamber performances, concerts and festivals.

Walking form (Xíng yuè) is a form in which the player performs while marching. In walking form, the players usually form a line and march or dance to the rhythm and music, playing their instruments at the same time. The marching musicians often march in unison, with their instruments sounding loudly to the beat, creating a majestic and powerful atmosphere. The marching form is more suitable for outdoor performance to inspire the atmosphere and present a warm and joyful atmosphere, often used in parades, festivals, carnivals and other occasions.

/ Taoism

Taoism focuses on the concept of the unity of heaven and man and the resonance of the universe, and this concept is reflected in the composition of Xi'an drum music. The musical structure and performance techniques of Xi'an drum music often draw on the sounds and rhythms of the natural world in pursuit of resonance with nature. At the same time, the Taoist idea of cultivation has also influenced the attitude of Xi'an drum musicians in their performance, requiring them to achieve a state of mind free of distractions and focus on music.


In Taoist music, Xi'an drum music is usually used in Taoist ceremonies and celebrations. Taoist music focuses on soothing, melodious music that infects believers with a calm and peaceful atmosphere. Xi'an drum music in Taoist music is often combined with other instruments such as zither and xiao to create a calm and serene musical atmosphere.

/ Buddhism

The introduction of Buddhism brought with it a solemn and dignified atmosphere, and this atmosphere has had an impact on the musical style of Xi'an drumming.
