What is DunHuang Music
The Dunhuang Grottoes include the Mogao Caves, the West Thousand Buddha Caves, the Guazhou Yulin Caves, the East Thousand Buddha Caves, the five temples of the Su Bei Caves, and other cave groups totaling more than 500 caves, of which more than 260 have images of musical instruments, accounting for almost half of the entire cave.
In the caves with images of musical instruments, more than six thousand painted musical instruments, more than forty different instruments, percussion, blowing, plucking, and string instruments are all types. It is a microcosm of music history from the Sixteen Kingdoms down to the Yuan Dynasty. It provides a basis for the study of ancient Chinese music history, especially the history of Buddhist music.

Why it is so special

Tengong MUSICIAN
The Tengong musicians(heavenly palace musicians) were legendary female musicians who resided in the heavenly palace and were believed to be able to please the gods through music and dance.
In Dunhuang murals, Tengong musicians are often depicted in scenes associated with nymphs, gods, or palaces. They are dressed in ornate costumes, holding musical instruments and performing graceful dances, while musicians play instruments on the side.
These murals reflect the reverence for music and dance at the time and the fantasy of celestial interaction.
天宫乐伎
The images of musical instruments in the Dunhuang murals are also closely related to those of the Heavenly Palace musicians.
The murals depict a variety of musical instruments, including silk and string instruments, wind instruments, and percussion instruments. These instruments are related to the musical culture and performance traditions of the time.
